Got a hunger for the steep and deep and want a true ski town? Fernie is it

The town of Fernie is a historic mining hamlet tucked into the far southeastern corner of British Columbia. This gem somehow still flies below the radar of most ski vacationers - which isn’t a bad thing

The wide-open alpine bowls of Fernie Alpine Resport with its knife ridges and and daredevil chutes are rarely crowded. Even better is that fresh tracks can still be found in afternoons on powder days.

This is a Canadian skiing sweet spot - with more consistent powder than Whistler to the west and warmer temperatures than Banff to the north.

The town of Fernie, BC is small and funky with a charming downtown that hasn't lost its connection to the past. Fernie is the kind of ski town where old skis are turned into fences and benches.

Fernie Alpine Resort located 4.5 miles outside town and is perched overlooking the Elk River Valley. The ski resort clings to the sculpted faces of the Lizard Range.

Fernie's five distinct bowls - Siberia Bowl, Timber Bowl, Currie Bowl, Lizard Bowl, and Cedar Bowl - will keep advanced skiers and snowboarders stoked on adrenaline all day long.

I'm lucky enough to have checked this off my must ski bucket list - and I'm sure I'll go back.
